The primary focus of a Hazmat technician was to clean hazardous materials from a wide range of environments.
- Confined space work was a large part of the job. Cleaning the inside of storage tanks on mine sites and other facilities.
- Responding to train derailments or motor vehicle collisions involving large amounts of hazardous materials to assist in the safe removal of said hazardous materials and ensure the least amount of material is spilled into the ground.
- Cleaning or removal of contaminated soil from previous spills, such as train derailments or motor vehicle collisions involving large amounts of hazardous materials.
- Working across Western Canada, travel was a big part of the job.
- Long days and different types of shift work, including night shifts.
- With a constantly changing work environment, I was able to learn and adapt rapidly as needed.
