The primary focus of a Hazmat technician was to clean hazardous materials from a wide range of environments.

  • Confined space work was a large part of the job. Cleaning the inside of storage tanks on mine sites and other facilities.
  • Responding to train derailments or motor vehicle collisions involving large amounts of hazardous materials to assist in the safe removal of said hazardous materials and ensure the least amount of material is spilled into the ground.
  • Cleaning or removal of contaminated soil from previous spills, such as train derailments or motor vehicle collisions involving large amounts of hazardous materials.
  • Working across Western Canada, travel was a big part of the job.
  • Long days and different types of shift work, including night shifts.
  • With a constantly changing work environment, I was able to learn and adapt rapidly as needed.





Type 1 Wildland Firefighter

  • Worked as a team and utilized fire suppression tactics to mitigate fire spread and control any potentially out-of-control fires.
  • Became a Task Force Leader for other assets, such as bulldozers and type 2 personnel, on large events, and helped lead coordinated efforts with other crews while on the fire line
  • Completed daily checks and inspections of equipment and vehicles to ensure proper function.
  • Used multiple different pieces of tools and equipment to suppress fires. Troubleshooting equipment in the middle of nowhere was sometimes required.
  • Established water supplies, connected hoses, and directed water onto fires.
  • Contributed to successful firefighting operations by maintaining optimal physical fitness and mental preparedness.
